The animated family comedy Arthur Christmas has topped the UK & Ireland box office chart.

The movie, featuring the voice of James McAvoy as the son of Santa Claus took the top slot when it overtook other popular movies including Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows and Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

Arthur Christmas is a fun family comedy in 3D that reveals Santa's secret hi-tech operation at the North Pole, and also stars Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent & Bill Nighy.

The top five UK & Ireland Box Office charts are:
