UFC 141 2011

LAS VEGAS – Alistair Overeem promised his fight with Brock Lesnar wouldn’t last too long.

He was right, but he shouldn’t have been so conservative. Overeem finished the former UFC heavyweight champion in just two minutes, 26 seconds, battering Lesnar with knees, kicks and punches to win by first-round knockout.

The win sets up Overeem, a former Strikeforce, DREAM and K-1 champion, for a shot at the UFC title held by Junior dos Santos.
Lesnar had no shot, as he was unable to deal with Overeem’s varied strikes. After the fight, he announced his retirement from mixed martial arts.

“I’m going to officially say tonight is the last time you’ll see me in the Octagon,” Lesnar said. Later, he added, “Brock Lesnar is officially retired.”

Lesnar went for a single-leg takedown, but Overeem easily shook it off. Overeem hurt Lesnar with a knee to the body early, but finished the fight with a great kick to the midsection. Lesnar winced in pain and backed to the cage. Overeem rushed in and rained punches on him until referee Mario Yamasaki stopped the fight.

Lesnar’s retirement blindsides White
The grudge match of the night was a one-sided affair, as Nate Diaz used his boxing to throttle Donald Cerrone in a lightweight battle.
Cerrone had no answer for Diaz’s boxing skills, taking repeated shots to the head throughout the fight. Cerrone was not interested in fighting Diaz on the ground and he was far outclassed in the stand-up.
Diaz landed a jab and then a solid right hand behind it just seconds after the bout began. That set the tone for what was a dominant performance for Diaz.
According to CompuStrike, Diaz out-landed Cerrone 258-66, a statistic clearly indicative of the way the fight unfolded. Diaz connected on an astounding 82 percent of his shots, going 258 of 314.
In a stunner, perennial contender Jon Fitch returned to the Octagon for the first time since February and was summarily dismissed by a big-time Johny Hendricks left hook. Hendricks landed the left on the chin and Fitch quickly went down.
Hendricks landed one punch before referee Steve Mazzagatti dove in to stop it at 12 seconds. Fitch was so disoriented that he began to grapple with Mazzagatti following the stoppage.
Alexander Gustafsson continued his rise in the UFC’s light heavyweight division with a comprehensive first-round stoppage of Vladimir Matyushenko. Gustaffson, who dominated from start to the quick finish, began the final sequence with a stiff jab that dumped the 41-year-old wrestler on his back.
Gustafsson pounced and landed a series of hard shots, forcing the stoppage at 2:13 of the first.
He overcame a serious case of the butterflies to pull off one of his most significant wins.
I was super nervous,” Gustafson said. “I watched him fight when I was a kid and looked up to him. This is the biggest win of my career and I’m so happy right now. He walked right into my jab. I saw in his eyes he was gone and I jumped on him. I’m just so happy right now.”
Matyushenko, a one-time title challenger, had hoped to use his wrestling and turn it into a meat grinder-type of match, but he was never in the fight.
Well I thought I was doing pretty good in the first round,” Matyushenko said. “He’s just unusual, a long lanky guy. He moves pretty well. I was hoping to take it to the second and third round and that he would lose his speed. But that didn’t happen. I’m still learning and hopefully I’ll get back in there soon.”
Jim Hettes used excellent judo and effect ground-and-pound to totally throttle Nam Phan in one of the card’s most one-sided bouts. Hettes won by scores of 30-25 twice and 30-26, coming close on several occasions to stopping the “Ultimate Fighter” veteran.
According to CompuStrike, Hettes had an 8-0 edge in takedowns and out-landed Phan 117-27.
Whether it was 10-8 or 10-9 or if he was winning, he’s such a tough competitor, so every second I had to be going forward,” Hettes said. “Just making sure I didn’t let him get on the offensive. I was working on keeping him down on the ground. Everyone knows I’m a submission specialist, so it just added a whole other aspect to my game.”
Phan had nothing but praise for Hettes afterward.
I just couldn’t do it this fight,” he said. “Jimmy’s good, man, really good. I know I have to work on my takedown defense now.”
Ross Pearson bloodied Junior Assuncao’s nose and consistently beat the Brazilian to the punch, winning a unanimous decision in his featherweight debut.
The first round was close, but Pearson was in control over the final two rounds, keeping the fight standing and landing the cleaner, harder shots.
Honestly, it felt a little bit different out there, just my body reacting to the drop to 145,” Pearson said. “It was just the tiniest difference. I’m glad I got three rounds of good fighting in. I didn’t tire, I didn’t get gassed and I kept the pressure up. All in all I felt good.
I would probably do a bit of a longer camp next time. I think I got the victory because I had the desire and the want to win. I had it in my head that whatever he was going to do, I was going to come back with something more.”
Danny Castillo used his wrestling, repeatedly scoring takedowns, to pull out a split decision over Anthony Njokuani in a verdict that didn’t sit well with the crowd. All three judges scored it 29-28, or two rounds to one, with two going for Castillo and the other for Njokuani.
Njokuani landed the better strikes and Castillo didn’t do much with the takedowns, but the judges favored his control.
It wasn’t the fight I wanted or the performance I wanted, but it’s another victory,” Castillo said. “I’m 3-1 this year now, my first year in the UFC. That fight was on two or three weeks notice [and] the one before that [at UFC 139 on Nov. 19] was on four weeks notice. I came out there to fight. I won that. It kind of disappointed me that everybody was booing me. I’m an exciting fighter. It’s frustrating.”
Dong Hyun Kim used a varied striking attack and a couple of well-placed kicks to dominate Sean Pierson and win a unanimous decision in their welterweight bout. All three judges had it 30-27 for Kim.

Kim nearly got the finish at the end of the second when landed a kick to the face. Pierson staggered back to the cage, but the bell sounded before Kim could move in. Pierson didn’t know where he was when he went to the corner.

“I’ve fought eight times so far and I have had the same style over and over, so I wanted to switch it around,” Kim said. “I worked really hard on my standing and striking. I knew I only had 20 seconds after I kicked him, so I pulled back. I didn’t want to be to greedy.”

Jacob Volkmann earned a unanimous decision victory over Efrain Escudero, winning 29-28 on all three judges’ cards, but he got most of his attention for a post-fight shot he took at President Obama.

Being interviewed by UFC analyst Joe Rogan, Volkmann said, “Obama needs a glassectomy.” Rogan was puzzled and said, “OK.” Volkmann then said, “Ask me what a glassectomy is, Joe.” Rogan, still seeming confused, said, “What is it?”

Volkmann then said, “It’s where they remove the belly button so you can see what you’re doing while your head’s up your [expletive].” As he said it, the crowd seemed shocked. A few booed, but most sat there silently.

Jacob Volkmann takes on Obama – again

In the opening fight of the night, Diego Nunes kicked his way to a unanimous decision victory over Manny Gamburyan in an important featherweight bout. Nunes raked Gamburyan with so many hard kicks to the legs in the first round that when the second began, a large black-and-blue mark had already formed on the outside of Gamburyan’s left leg.

Gamburyan took the second round by scoring a few takedowns and landing a good knee that swelled Nunes’ eye. He also connected with the best punch of the fight in the second, cracking Nunes with a big overhand right.

Nunes, who had abandoned his kicks for the most part in the second round, went back to them in the third and kept Gamburyan off of him while scoring points.

All three judges had it 29-28 for Nunes, as did Yahoo! Sports.
I’m very happy with the victory tonight,” Nunes said. “Manny Gamburyan can take a lot of punishment, because I hit him with a lot. This just motivates me to come back and be better, I want to come out and keep getting better and better every time. It motivates me to train harder and keep working hard. I have some room for improvement and I’ll work hard.”

Gamburyan said an injury early in the fight prevented him for doing what he wanted.
I hurt my shoulder early on, the same one I hurt in UFC 135 and I could only use one hand,” Gamburyan said. “He’s a tough fighter, and a good one, and you can’t fight against him with just one arm. I give him props, he did a good job. I was done.”

Manchester United Vs Blackburn 2 vs 3 31 December 2011

Sir Alex Ferguson suffered the ignominy of watching his Manchester United side lose to basement club Blackburn on his 70th birthday.
Yakubu gave Rovers the lead from the spot after Dimitar Berbatov had pulled down defender Chris Samba.
The Nigerian made it 2-0 when he made the most of slack defending to thrash in, before Berbatov brought United back into the match with a header and shot.
But Grant Hanley spoilt the day for Ferguson when he nodded in the winner.
Third goal was the killer - Ferguson
Hanley exemplified the spirit of Steve Kean's Blackburn of late. A draw at Anfield last week has now been followed up with arguably the greatest victory of his managerial career.
The win, which bookies had at 28-1 prior to the match, moves Rovers from bottom to third from bottom, and only two points shy of 17th.
It should give Kean some respite from the supporters, who have been calling for his resignation.
DID YOU KNOW?

Manchester United's defeat by the Premier League's bottom club was their second in 2011, having also lost to Wolves in February

There will not be calls for Ferguson to resign after this loss, but fans and the Scot will be deeply disappointed with United's display, after they missed out on the chance to leapfrog bitter rivals and league leaders Manchester City - and be top of the Premier League going into 2012.
United went a goal behind early on when Berbatov grabbed Samba's shirt as a free-kick was launched into the area - and pulled the Congolese to the ground.
Referee Mike Dean was perfectly positioned to see the foul and pointed to the spot. Yakubu, with little back-lift, calmly slotted past David de Gea.
Rovers would have been expecting to weather a storm from the restart, but there was no storm.
Kean sees United win as platform to survival
Both sides were without many regular first-team players, but Blackburn, buoyed by their draw at Anfield last week, were the far better organised.
Ferguson's side were largely limited to half chances, although Nani went close with an angled drive which flew a yard wide, while Javier Hernandez's turn-and-shot also missed the target by a foot.
United were rocked again after the break when Yakubu scored his second to the astonishment of those watching.
The ball bounced off the legs of Michael Carrick but then Yakubu drifted past a static Phil Jones and angled a brilliant strike past De Gea.
But 60 seconds from the restart, United pulled a goal back when Berbatov headed in after Rafael's attempted shot drifted into his path.
Hanley delighted with scoring winner
And the Bulgarian equalised soon after with his sixth in three games - a shot swept in from 10 yards, following brilliant work from Antonio Valencia down the right.
It was all set for a final flourish from United - but Blackburn continued to press forward, winning a corner on the left.
Morten Gamst Pedersen swung the ball into the area and the impressive youngster Hanley, 20, beat De Gea to the punch with his first header before nodding in the follow-up

Health Stories In 2012

The most deadly recorded listeria outbreak and concerns about nuclear radiation after Japan's biggest earthquake made major health headlines this year, along with several notable deaths to cancer and the inspiring recovery of a Congresswoman who suffered brain injuries from a gunshot wound.
Here's a look back at some of the top stories of 2011, a year that marked major anniversaries in some of the world's most pernicious diseases -- HIV/AIDS and the "war" on cancer.
A congresswoman's recovery
2011 was barely a week old when shots rang out in a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona. U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, 40, had been shot in the head by a gunman.
The bullet passed through the left side of Gifford's brain, but she survived. A few months later, her press office began revealing photos of her progress.
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords serves troops
'Cold shutdown' achieved at Fukushima
Cause of listeria in cantaloupe discovered
In November, she gave her first televised interview, saying that she never became angry over what happened. She shrugged and said it was "life."
Nuclear fears in Japan
An 9.0-magnitude earthquake, the most powerful one to hit Japan in recorded history, led to a tsunami that engulfed parts of Honshu. It also started a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi's nuclear facility in northeast Japan.

Subsequent tests have detected radiation in a sample of people who live around the power plant.
Although the Japanese workers were able to achieve a "cold shutdown" at the plant in mid-December, experts say it will take perhaps decades to fully clean up the nuclear disaster. What this entails for people who live around the site remains unclear.
WHO warns of possible cancer risk from cell phones
The World Health Organization announced in May that radiation from cell phones can possibly cause cancer, adding that no adverse health effects had been established. While there are no definitive studies, the warning gave people pause about cell phone use.
Here are six tips on minimizing radiation and some perspective from CNN Chief Medical Correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
Tainted fruit
A listeria outbreak in cantaloupe killed 29 people and sickened nearly 150 in the United States, making this year's outbreak the deadliest for listeria since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began keeping track. One woman pregnant at the time of illness had a miscarriage, according to the CDC.
The outbreak first detected in September was traced back to a Colorado farm. Unsanitary conditions at the farm's packing facility are a possible contributing cause, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in October.
Prostate cancer screening controversy
The question of whether prostate-specific antigen tests for prostate cancer do more harm than good stirred controversy this year.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force gave the PSA test a "D" rating, meaning it offers "no net benefit or that the harms outweigh the benefits."
The issue is that many of the prostate cancers that get detected are so small and slow-growing that they'll never be harmful. The screening does not determine whether the cancer is a harmful one versus the slow, harmless ones.
Most men who learn they have prostate cancer receive invasive treatment for a disease that might not have affected their health. At the same time, prostate cancer survivors say their lives were saved by the screenings.
Cancer's toll
Cancer claimed the lives of several luminaries this year: tech innovator Steve Jobs (pancreatic cancer), author Christopher Hitchens (esophageal cancer) and former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier (liver cancer).
This year also marked the 40th year since Congress passed the National Cancer Act of 1971. The legislation never mentioned the word "war," but many were optimistic that cancer would be conquered. Decades later, that naivete has faded as scientists realize the complexity of cancer.
This year, the FDA approved two drugs for melanoma: vemurafenib and ipilimumab, which was the first melanoma drug to be approved in 13 years. Seven of the 35 drugs approved by the FDA this year are advances in cancer treatment.
30 years of HIV/AIDS
It was the 30th anniversary of HIV/AIDS. The first report of the disease appeared on June 5, 1981, in the Center for Disease Control's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
Although medicine and treatment has been greatly advanced since the 1980s, the disease has killed more than 25 million people worldwide. Today, about 33 million are living with HIV/AIDS, with more than a million of those in the United States.
This year, the National Institutes of Health published the results of a study that says taking antiretroviral drugs at the onset of HIV leads to a dramatic reduction in HIV transmission.
Head injuries
The toll of repeated head blows and injuries loomed over football again.
One former football player killed himself after leaving a message telling his family to get his brain to the NFL brain bank. An examination of his brain showed that he had signs of a brain disease found in athletes who have been exposed to repeated brain trauma.
This year, 75 former players accused the NFL of engaging in "a scheme of fraud and deceit" and denying the link between concussion and decline. Another group of former NFL players sued the league in December, accusing the league of failing to protect them against on-the-field brain injuries.
The NFL has begun cracking down on helmet-to-helmet blows with fines and suspensions.
Health care reform
Finally, the health care reform law signed into law by President Barack Obama last year went through several legal challenges in 2011 and will head to the Supreme Court in 2012.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was passed in March 2010 by a Democratic congressional majority with the support of the president. The law faces legal challenge from 26 states, led by Florida. Those appeals have paved the way to a hearing in the Supreme Court.
This year, the CDC reported that about 2.5 million young people have received health insurance coverage as a result of health care reform measures.

Delicious Food For Christmas

From tasty roast turkey to more-ish mince pies and endlessly tempting tins of chocolates, it's a season for feasting and enjoying everything edible. But for people like Pippa Wilson, who spent many Christmases coping with eating disorders, this time of year can be anything but joyful. With counselling and the help and support of family, however, she is now able to enjoy baking mince pies with her three-year-old son and enjoy a Christmas party. "I was forced to look at the issues that were making me miserable and deal with the underlying causes of my eating disorder. "Food is just a symptom of something deeper. You don't battle the eating disorder and win," Pippa says. "It's emotional and psychological - and it's not easy to deal with these problems. In my head I was unhappy." Pippa Wilson
With the support of her family, she was able to alleviate the symptoms and recover.

Food is fun
"Once you've recovered from an eating disorder, you can enjoy Christmas in a whole new way, because you appreciate how hard it used to be."

"Food is part of the fun now, but I don't focus on it much. I eat what I want, when I want, without worrying."

But like many people with eating disorders, the memories of those terrible Christmas are still raw.

Pippa was 19 when she first became anorexic, after binge-eating during her teens.

Her first Christmas with an eating disorder was miserable.

"I thought I could control things, but I couldn't keep starving myself. So I tried to eat normally on Christmas Day and in the end I became bulimic.

"I pretended to be fine, but purged behind closed doors. It was my way of coping with the situation."

'Daunting day'
Many people with anorexia, bulimia or other eating disorders say they start getting concerned about Christmas months before, sometimes as far ahead as the summer. It is the combination of food, family and emotion that makes it such a daunting and difficult day, Pippa says. Pippa spent the following Christmas alone in university accommodation with a pile of videos. "I didn't want to do anything that would make me worse. I was still horribly ill but at least I wasn't terrified by all the food and the expectation of eating." But are we all affected in some way by the tendency to over-indulge during the festive season? Harriet Maxwell, a retired GP with an interest in eating disorders, has written a book - entitled Clarice - about a woman who becomes entangled in a world where food is both her greatest comfort and greatest enemy. "Eating and food are undoubtedly very emotional things. What starts as comfort eating, satisfying a need for something, could turn into bulimia if you get to a size where you are not happy and feel too fat."

Pain and stress
Society is, arguably, obsessed with food. Fast, convenient food sold relatively cheaply is ubiquitous. Rather than drinking or drugs, it is not surprising that some people turn to food for comfort. Kings College London's online information on eating disorders explains why it can dominate these peoples' lives.

Start Quote Breaking with tradition can be worthwhile if it allows the person freedom around food and eating.”

Mary George
Beat spokesperson
"Food and eating assume an abnormal significance... and rather than eat in response to hunger of appetite, individuals use food and eating to help them cope with painful or uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, or with stressful situations."

However there is no single cause of an eating disorder. Research suggests that psychological, interpersonal, socio-cultural and biological factors all play a role. Figures from the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence suggest that 1.6 million people in the UK are affected by an eating disorder. Around 10% of sufferers are anorexic, 40% are bulimic, and the rest have an eating disorder with no name. Young women aged 15 to 25 are most at risk.

Understanding
But an eating disorder is by no means a life sentence, although the success of any treatment relies on the individual recognising they have a problem.

Mary George, spokesperson for Beat, the national eating disorders charity, urges understanding from family and friends, particularly at this time of year. "Christmas is such a difficult time for someone with an eating disorder, and what the person needs is compassion and understanding from those around them. "Breaking with tradition can be worthwhile if it allows the person freedom around food and eating - what matters is that the person feels they can cope, not that they eat 'normally'

Nutrition For The Brain

According to The Franklin Institute, the brain cells need two times the energy of the other cells in the body. Proper nutrition is very important for maintaining brain function and mental abilities, such as focus, memory and concentration.

To help you stay focused, you need a diet rich in iron, B vitamins folate, complex carbohydrates and essential fatty acids.

Iron
The relationship between the level of iron in the body and the brain's ability to focus first examined in 2001. In a study of the Agricultural Research Service, led by Mary J. Kretsch, foods rich in iron can help to concentrate and focus.

Iron-rich foods such as wholemeal bread, green vegetables, nuts, fish, meat, poultry, pasta and cereals.

Folate
Folate is a B vitamin necessary for the synthesis of nucleic acids and long chain fatty acids that are essential for brain function. For pregnant women, folate-rich foods such as melons, bananas, orange juice, strawberry, lemon, spinach, asparagus, dried beans, split peas, rice cereal and it is very important. If pregnant women folate deficiency, it can increase the risk of babies born with disabilities.

Vitamin B-6
Vitamin B-6 is a healthy brain food because of this vitamin can change food proteins into amino acids necessary for the production and synthesis of neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. According to dieticians, a third substance that makes the brain to focus on in a long time.

Foods rich in vitamin B-6 include peanut butter, walnuts, soybeans, peanuts, oatmeal, sunflower seeds, tomato juice, tuna, eggs, fish, beef, chicken and potatoes.

Antioxidants
Fresh fruits and vegetables can keep oxygen flowing to the brain that can help to focus. Foods that contain antioxidants such as grape, pomegranate, kiwi, cherries, blueberries, oranges, lemon, pineapple and oranges. Vegetables rich in antioxidants that is chili, kale, and red cabbage.

Glucose
Only fuel your brain cells use is glucose. Glucose can be obtained from complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, oatmeal and wheat bread products. These foods are an important part of the brain food. Because, the brain can not store glucose and requires a constant supply of blood.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Your brain needs omega-3 fatty acids to strengthen the relationship between the cells. These foods are essential brain food because the body can not make omega-3 fatty acids. You can find the content of these substances in fish, walnuts and flaxseed.

The second round of elections in egypt

Egyptians headed to the polls Wednesday for the second round of the country's three-stage election process to select a new parliament.
The round is vital because voting occurs in Giza, Luxor, Aswan and Ismailia regions , which have historically favored conservative Islamic candidates.
Egypt's Islamists claimed victory in the first round last week.
The relatively moderate Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party has said on its website that it had won 34 seats in the runoff election.
At Giza, about 100 people waited to vote outside a polling station to vote.
Abdul Kareem Mohammed said the first round of the election made him feel proud about the changes in his nation.
"I am happy to vote for the first time in my life today," Mohammed , 28, said. "This is the voice of the Egyptian people."
Voter Hani Salah al-dine said he voted for the Muslim Brotherhood. He said he believed the first round of the election was fair, citing the outcome of obscure candidates who did better than some rich, well-known candidates.
"This show's the common man's voice is being heard," he said.

Request Forgiveness To The Family Marines

Some Marine Corps families, mourning a son or daughter killed in action, received an unexpected surprise for the holidays: an ornament of the Purple Heart, a letter addressed to their fallen hero and even information about athletic reconditioning.
The Marine Corps was apologizing Tuesday for sending the packages to families of the fallen instead of the Marines wounded in action but still alive.
"There are no words to express how very sorry we are for the hurt such a mistake has caused the families of our fallen warriors," said Col. John L. Mayer, commanding officer of the Marines Wounded Warrior Regiment. "We always strive to honor the sacrifices these Marines, sailors and their families gave to this country."
Mayer, alerted to the problem when families began phoning in Monday, said there was no excuse for what happened.
"We accept full responsibility for this error and are moving quickly to reach out to the families we have affected," he said in a statement. "This initiative was meant to thank combat-wounded Marines and sailors for their service."
Mayer is calling some of the families who telephoned after they received the packages in error and all will receive a letter of apology.

Iran To Move Enrichment Operations If Necessary

Iran will move its uranium enrichment plants to safer sites if conditions make this necessary, the semi-official Mehr news agency on Wednesday quoted a senior Revolutionary Guards commander as saying.

Controversy over Iran's uranium enrichment program has resulted in Western powers imposing increasingly tight economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic, and Israel and the United States say they have not ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to persuade Tehran to suspend its sensitive nuclear work.

"If conditions require, we will move our uranium enrichment centers to safer places," Mehr quoted Brigadier General Gholamreza Jalali as saying.

Western powers suspect Iran is trying to acquire the ability to produce nuclear weapons. Iran denies this, saying it is enriching uranium only for peaceful purposes such as power generation and medical use.

Israel, widely believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, says a nuclear-armed Iran would threaten its existence.

A November report by the U.N. watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency suggested that Iran has been pursuing the science needed to make an atomic bomb at least until 2003.

Iran has enriched uranium to 20 percent purity, a level which Western states say is more than it needs for peaceful nuclear power. But 20 percent pure uranium is still not pure enough to make a bomb.

Iran says its response to any military action will be "painful."

"If the Americans and Israelis could attack our nuclear facilities and inflict a blow on it they would have surely done it," said Jalali, head of Iran's Civil Defense Organization.

A hardline lawmaker, Parviz Sarvari, on Monday said OPEC member Iran planned to carry out military maneuvers near the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf, where about 30 percent of the world's crude exports pass through.

But Iran's foreign ministry spokesman dismissed the lawmaker's remarks, saying it was Sarvari's personal view and did not represent Iran's official view.

However, Iranian officials have in the past warned about the

closure of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz as a possible retaliatory measure if the country's nuclear facilities were attacked.

Concerns over Iran's disputed nuclear work and threats to key shipping lanes drove up oil prices by more than $2 to post its biggest gain since late November on Tuesday, in sharp contrast to a fall in most other financial markets.

Japan Defender Yuto Nagatomo Heads Inter Milan's Winner At Genoa

A goal from Japan defender Yuto Nagatomo handed Inter Milan a 1-0 win at Genoa that lifted them to seventh in the Italian Serie A table.
Claudio Ranieri's side made it two wins in three days after Saturday's triumph over Fiorentina but despite going above Genoa Inter still lie ten points behind leaders Juventus.
The away side dominated the match, having 17 attempts on goal compared to Genoa's four, but wasted chances to take the lead before the hour mark through Marco Faraoni, Andrea Poli and Diego Milito.
Juventus stay unbeaten as Roma rue penalty miss
But Nagatomo struck the decisive blow for the 2010 European Champions League winners on 67 minutes as he headed home a cross from Riccardo Alvarez.
Alvarez came close to wrapping up the match soon after as he rattled the post with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Genoa had a late chance to claim a point but Miguel Veloso spurned the opportunity to ensure Inter made it four wins out of five in the league.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid cruised past third division opponents Ponferradina in the first leg of their Spanish Cup last 32 tie.
Jose Mourinho's side got back to winning ways after their crushing 3-1 defeat to Barcelona on Saturday that saw their arch rivals leapfrog Real to go top of La Liga.
Barcelona stars meet tsunami survivors
But Ponferradina never looked like causing an upset after Jose Callejon put the defending champions ahead in the 29th minute from Sami Khedira's cross.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who was criticized in the aftermath of the defeat to Barcelona for missing two clear chances, grabbed the second five minutes later after latching onto Gonzalo Higuain's pass.
The only disappointment for Real was the dismissal of defender Raul Albiol. The second leg is at Real's Bernabeu stadium next week.

A Grenade And Gun Attack In This Eastern Belgian City Left Five

A grenade and gun attack in this eastern Belgian city left five people dead, including the attacker, and 119 wounded Tuesday, authorities said.
A 23-month-old baby died in a hospital late Tuesday after being wounded in the attack near a Christmas market in a city center square, said Katrin Delcourt, a spokeswoman for the Liege provincial governor's office. Others killed in the attack included two teenage boys, aged 15 and 17, and a 75-year-old woman, Liege public prosecutor Danielle Reynders told reporters.
Some 52 people were treated for injuries by medics at a field hospital set up near the scene, the prosecutor said, while others went to hospitals in the area.
Police fear the death toll will rise overnight, a spokeswoman for Liege police said.
The attacker was identified as Nordine Amrani, 33, of Liege, Reynders said.
He died in the attack in which he hurled three grenades and fired weapons from a rooftop into the crowded square near a court building, she said.
The man acted alone in the attack in Place St. Lambert, and police are not looking for other suspects, she said, adding that he had left his home with a pistol, a semi-automatic rifle and the grenades in his bag.
Police had asked the attacker, who had been previously convicted on drugs and weapons offenses, to come in for an interview in an ongoing investigation, the prosecutor said. He had never been charged with terror offenses.
Reynders said officials were not yet able to explain the motive for the attack.
Delcourt, the spokeswoman for the provincial governor's office, told CNN that Amrani was on conditional parole. She could not give details of the police investigation.
It remained unclear whether he had committed suicide or had died when one of the grenades exploded in his face, she said.
One of the weapons he had, a light automatic rifle, is a standard-issue weapon in the Belgian army, Delcourt said.
A senior Belgian security source, who has been briefed on the investigation but did not want to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media, told CNN that Amrani's police meeting scheduled Tuesday was for suspected rape.
Amrani was on an elevated walkway above the square when he began throwing grenades down into the crowd and then firing, before shooting himself in the head with his revolver, the source said.
Amrani was previously in prison on drugs and arms racketeering charges, the source said, having been caught cultivating "several thousand" cannabis plants.
Authorities will carry out an autopsy in part to see if he was under influence of drugs during the attack, which has shocked the country and its security service, the source said.
He said that during Amrani's 40 months in jail, he was not diagnosed with any mental disorder or seen to be politicized before being released on conditional parole. The source said authorities have found no ties to Islamist terrorism.
Liege resident Kevin Hauzeur told CNN that he ducked for cover as he heard a "huge explosion and two or three gunshots" in the city center.
A lot of people were in the area at the time to shop at the Christmas market, Hauzeur said. The crowd was "spinning around, crying -- it was really chaotic," he said.
He said he had seen what appeared to be the body of an attacker before police cleared everyone from the area. Police told him the man had shot himself, Hauzeur said.
A CNN correspondent at the scene Tuesday evening said dozens of police in fluorescent jackets remained in the cordoned-off square but it was otherwise deserted.
Municipal cleaning vehicles sprayed the central market area with water, he said, overseen by a large Christmas tree, which remained illuminated.
Oliver Moch, a spokesman for the Citadelle hospital, the largest in the Liege area, said 31 people injured in the attack had been admitted for treatment there.
The Belgian Red Cross also had a team on site in Liege, operations director Gregory Jones told CNN earlier. It was providing psychological support.
King Albert II and Queen Paola went to Liege to meet the mayor, provincial governor and workers with the Red Cross and emergency services following the attack, the Belgian royal palace told CNN.
Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo also traveled to Liege, his spokesman said.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague issued a statement saying: "There can be absolutely no place for appalling acts of violence such as this in any society, and I condemn this attack in the strongest terms."
Charles Boisoin, whose apartment overlooks the city center, told CNN shortly after the attack that he and his neighbors had been instructed by police not to leave their homes. The city center was virtually deserted and all he could hear and see were helicopters flying overhead, he said.
Television footage and images from the scene showed blood on the sidewalk, as well as police officers and vehicles gathered nearby.
The provincial governor's office initially said that police were searching for at least one suspect.
Liege is Belgium's third-largest city, after Brussels and Antwerp, the national tourist office says. Dating back centuries, it is an important cultural and industrial center for the country.

Serves 6

2O tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 plump garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 large carrots (350g total weight), diced
18 oz 5% fat minced beef
3½ fl oz white wine
1 tsp ground cinnamon, plus extra
¼ tsp ground allspice
14 oz can plum tomatoes
2 tbsp tomato purèe
1 heaped tbsp chopped oregano leaves
2 good handfuls chopped flat-leaf parsley , plus extra to garnish
3 aubergines (about 750g/1lb 10oz total weight), ends trimmed
1 tbsp lemon juice
For the topping
2 eggs
1 tbsp cornflour
10 oz 2% Greek yogurt
2 oz Parmesan, grated
To serve
halved cherry tomatoes and thinly sliced red onion and rocket salad
Method

Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large, wide sautè pan. Tip in the onion and garlic, then fry for 6-8 mins until turning golden. Add the carrots and fry for 2 mins more. Stir the meat into the pan, breaking it up as you stir. Cook and stir over a high heat until the meat is no longer pink. Pour in the wine and briefly cook until most of the liquid has evaporated. Stir in the cinnamon and allspice. Tip in the tomatoes, tomato purèe and 1 tbsp water (mixed with any juices left in the can), then stir to break up the tomatoes. Season with some pepper, add all the oregano and half the parsley, cover, then simmer on a low heat for 50 mins, stirring occasionally. Season to taste. Mix in the remaining parsley. Can be done a day ahead and refrigerated overnight.
While the meat cooks (unless you are doing this a day ahead) prepare the aubergines. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/ gas 6. Brush a little of the remaining oil onto 2 large baking sheets. Mix the rest of the oil with the lemon juice. Slice the aubergines into 1cm thick lengthways slices, then lay them on the oiled baking sheets. Brush with the oil and lemon mix, then season with pepper. Bake for 20-25 mins until soft, then set aside. Lower oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4.
Spread 2 big spoonfuls of the meat mixture on the bottom of an ovenproof dish (about 28 x 20 x 6cm deep). Lay the aubergine slices on top, slightly overlapping. Spoon the rest of the meat mixture on top. Beat the eggs in a bowl. Slacken the cornflour with a little of the yogurt, stir in the rest of the yogurt, then mix this into the eggs with half the cheese. Season with pepper. Pour and spread this over the meat to cover it. Sprinkle with the rest of the cheese, a little cinnamon and a grating of pepper. Bake for 50 mins-1 hr until bubbling and golden.
Leave moussaka to settle for 8-10 mins, then scatter over some chopped parsley and cut into squares. Serve with a salad of tomato, red onion and rocket.
